Lun*na Menoh Conducting Her version of Maurice Ravel's BOLERO

Lun*na Menoh conducting her own version of Maurice Ravel's BOLERO. All sounds from the sewing machine. What she has done is take Ravel's masterpiece back to the Industrial Age, when the sewing machine first started to appear in people's homes. Probably the first mechanic machine that appeared in the everyday home. Ravel's dad worked in a factory, so he was aware of the rhythms of the factory, and then therefore "Bolero." 

Lun*na worked from the original score by Ravel, so it is probably one of the most accurate versions of the orchestrated piece in existence. It's 18 minutes long, which was the original length that Ravel wanted for Bolero. Some orchestrations speed up the piece, but Ravel consistently asked for it to last 18 minutes. Lun*na honored the composer, by following his suggestion. As well, as bringing it all back to the factory 

Pretty much a masterpiece by both Ravel and Lun*na.

The Velaslavasay Panorama welcomes back experimental artist, designer and musician Lun*na Menoh for her première performance of Maurice Ravel's Bolero, reimagined using sampled sewing machine noise and found sound.

Opening the show are Les Sewing Sisters (Atsuko Yoo and Saori Mitome), an artist collective using the sewing machine and voices to create music surrounding matters of dress, fabric and fashion.

~ON LUN*NA MENOH~
Lun*na Menoh is a Japanese born singer sewing artist who lives in Los Angeles. Her work deals with fashion, clothing and exposing the invisible thread between performance and fabric by making sculpturesque dresses, paintings, and a series of fashion shows with her conceptual but wearable outfits.

Starting in 1999, She made a number of paintings, of men's white dress shirts that are given a dirty stained ring around the collar. In early 2000, she started making music with the bands Seksu Roba and her own group Jean Paul Yamamoto. Currently her band is Les Sewing Sisters which creates pop songs about dresses & dress making approached with experimental touches such as using the sewing machine as a musical instrument.

Programming at the Velaslavasay Panorama has been funded in part by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.

Vinyl Listening Party with Lun*na Menoh (among other people) at the Velaslavasay Panorama

As a benefit for the XYZ Club and the Velaslavasay Panorama, Lun*na Menoh is participating in The Record Listening Party curated by Tosh Berman.  Her and her cohorts will be playing their favorite piece of vinyl or a record that somehow changed their lives.  Lun*na promises to play an Enka record from Japan.  Tickets are $30 which also includes a light dinner and drinks.   The others who are participating are Joey Altruda, Anna Biller, Lawrence Gjurgevich, Kristine McKenna, as well as Tosh.

This specific event took place on October 20, 2013 at The Velaslavasasy Panorama in Los Angeles.


Lunna Menoh has pioneered research in the field of the Dirty Collar since '99.

Historically, the phenomenon has made a stain on many fields including, but not limited to, fashion, iconography, psychology and chemistry. 

These marks will come to light via a sewing salon (attendees are encouraged to provide an item of clothing with a stained collar to be augmented by a team of professionals), a petit fashion parade in the theater of Collar Couture, a talk show interview of Lun*na Menoh in person, and representations of headless but collared historical figures.
